There’s some good news for you creative types – the days of the starving artist are over… hopefully.

With the growth of the Internet and Internet-related business, the demand for creativity and artistic talents is higher than ever. While you might not be crafting pieces worthy of the Louvre, you can definitely make more than enough to fill your belly. In addition to your natural talents, you’ll need a few more skills to hit the big time as an Internet marketer.

Follow these tips to become a success in your new field:

Learn to Sell without Selling

In this brave new world of ours, the key to selling is something that will appeal to your artistic temperament as long as you don’t look too closely at the other side. The best way to gain fame as an Internet marketer is to disguise your sales campaign as free content. Think viral videos, funny cartoons, crazy stories, or anything else that will set the world where tweets rule supreme on fire. While your audience is entertained, your strategy of building a brand is successful.

Be Willing to Put in the Time

Although Internet marketing can be a high paying career, it’s also a lot of hard work. If you expect the dough to start rolling in with minimum effort, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Hard work and long hours don’t always agree with the artistic temperament – unless you’re working 24/7 on your latest masterpiece! If you can equate your new marketing project with a work of creative genius, you’ll be well on your way to success.

Learn Some New skills

While being an idea-man is a great place to start, it won’t turn you into an overnight sensation in the online world. To fully leverage your natural talents, add these skills to your repertoire:

  • Search Engine Optimization – Often referred to simply as SEO, this technique will earn you priority ranking on the online world’s favorite search engines. After all, it won’t matter how engaging your creativity is if no one sees it. In addition, try creating creating custom RSS feeds, and Google places optimization (local search), for more exposure.
  • XHTML and CSS – While no one expects an Internet marketer to be a full-blown programmer, it will help everyone if you understand a few basic concepts when it comes to what is and is not possible with a web page.
  • Pay-Per-Click Marketing – While this is one of the most effective marketing strategies, it’s also one of the costliest. Before using this one, make sure you fully understand the right way to go about it – or you could quickly drain your entire budget and then some.
  • Social Media Marketing – These days, anyone who’s anyone spends a considerable amount of their day on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. To reach this audience, you’ll need to learn the specific strategies that work with these platforms and their loyal members.
  • Statistics and Analytics – These two things will tell you how you’re doing and what your next step should be. Learn how to interpret the numbers and use the results to your advantage. Monitor your SEO efforts, to stay ahead.
  • eMail Marketing – You should know that this is one of the methods that many internet marketers are using as it is still very effective, provided you apply, best practices only and not SPAM. There are several information out there about how to build a list, so it should be hard fro you to learn the ropes on how to use this tactic effectively.

By entering the Internet marketing field, you can find success and an outlet for your creativity. If you are doing local business, don’t forget to include Google Places Optimisation in your marketing strategy. What’s your dream job online?

  • Hi Ely, interesting article and great resource for everybody wants to learn how to be a good internet marketer. Hmm, I think I want to learn to one of them 😉 Your article so impress me sist.
Thanks DiTesco for publishing this awesome article.

    • Hi Latief. You are welcome. I really liked this article because while it is short, it is sweet and straight to the point. Love the concept of “selling without selling”. Something to think about 🙂

      • Yes, I love Ely’s writing style.
I hope she like to write for my simple blog one day DiTesco.

  • Its important that you set yourself a specific time frame for your work, so that you have some free time for yourself to do other things, in order to stay motivated on the job.

    • I totally agree Andreas. As of a matter of fact I think that the whole idea of being successful online is to allow us to have more free time that can be devoted to our family and love ones. Everything has to done within a timely and well planned agenda 🙂

  • Some good tips. You need to build a lot of skills to succeed in online marketing. It’s not just throw up a site and hope – there’s a lot of work and a big learning curve involved.

    • Hi Stephanie. So true, there is a bid learning curve involved in online marketing just like anything else in life. Sometimes I even compare it to an “infinite loop”. You learn, go back to basics and then learn some more, rinse and repeat 🙂

  • Great tips, Ely. As far as I’m concerned though, some of those skills to be added is why outsourcing was invented. 😉

    • Hi Dennis,

I’m not against outsourcing but if you don’t have a whole lot of money to spend it’s good to do it yourself. It’s also good to learn and know how to do certain things as an Internet Marketer. Either way there is always work to do.

  • Hi Elysateek,

I like what you said here in this post. I don’t disagree with anything. I’ve got to say though I don’t like paying for traffic.

I don’t like pay per click marketing. I believe if you do it right and are willing to work you can generate some good free traffic for you self with out paying for it, especially when starting out.

When you start to monetize a bit it’s good to do a little of both, paid and free traffic getting strategies.

    • Hi Terry. PPC is a quick form to get “something” out there and if you have it done in a “controlled” manner it could bring in results faster than anything else. On the other hand, I agree with you that there is no point of spending money on paid traffic when you can get it for free. The way I look at it is that, free traffic is a mid to long term strategy and PPC or similar a short term one 🙂

  • I’ve realised after years online that it’s difficult to be good in everything though. Focusing in mastering some key skills will be more productive. After some success start leveraging other people skills.

    • I hear you Alexis. Being a master in one thing compared to “the know it all” attitude is way better. It also helps to be recognized quicker as an authority in “something” than people trying to figure out what is it that you are actually good at 🙂

  • thanks to suggest me. i want to follow your suggestion. thanks

  • I’m back! Whoaw! These are all great tips and advice Ely. Being a good Internet marketer, will turn your visitors into sales. I believe the point of social marketing now and its role to internet marketers, is to build those connections, turn them into relationships that will build confidence into your visitors where they want to get more from you and start buying from you because they feel they know you. Thanks for sharing.

  • Selling without selling is the craziest bit and is the key to any successful marketing. People are really tired of sales pitches and they are blind and deaf to “Buy This” noise. Providing value and selling without even them knowing it really works.

    Nice post.

    • Hi Jane. Barging in here for Ely 🙂 Don’t you just love that “selling without selling” attitude? You are absolutely right about people being tired of those “same” old boring (and sometimes annoying) sales pitches that unless it changes, will just help “us” marketers, whose purpose is to provide value and help people out.

  • Great tips.. sell with out selling is a hidden key and I guess that building relationships with others will help to find this key.

    thanks for the great Post.

    • Hi Faissal. Thanks for leaving your thoughts. How’s that “post” coming? Any time soon 🙂

      • It will be posted on next Monday ^,~ thanks for asking.

        • Fantastic. Will be on the look out fr it on Monday then. Thanks for the heads up!

  • In order to become successful as an internet marketer you should stay in touch with the latest trends and always looking to learn for something new this and hard work is the path to success…

    • Good point. The path to success is definitely not an easy ride and a lot of effort has to be put in to obtain the results one is seeking

  • You are so right about it being work! Whoever thought you could make money online without putting some work into it? I know. People are bragging that they do that and they might, however, on the front end, they worked their bottoms off! LOL Nice post!

  • Short, sweet and precise post.Being a good internet marketer requires you to become a constant learner because I believe that in this field, its a never ending learning process. Internet is pretty much a fast changing medium, so we must cope up with it.

  • This is the how you can tell every thing to a newbie in short and summarize way. And all the topics suggested to be a best Internet Marketer are seriously necessary. Specially Analytics and Statistics work like Oxygen. I agree that it is not necessary for Internet Marketer to know about XHTML but one should have little know how about these codes to modify little in require. Such nice topic has not left any thing to share just want to add by using social media properly one can enhance sale and profit really high.

    • Yep, you absolutely need tools like Google Analytics to see if your marketing efforts have any actual impact. Learning to use analytics is the only way you can grow and improve your online marketing strategies. The beauty of internet marketing is that everything is instantly quantifiable.

  • It should be noted that a successful online marketer has to know how to estimate the demand for products offered and how to estimate the level of competition. Also, a marketer should master the art of product advertising and brand development.

  • Hello DiTesco,

Your tips are really superb , I already know about only few tips but from now ill apply rest tips aswell.

  • If you ask me that I think internet marketing is now a branch of art and only an artist can understand the true sense of internet marketing. Secondly you must have artistic nature to survive in the internet marketing business in a sense that artist only loves his art he doesn’t love worth of his art. In other words while doing internet marketing don’t think in the perspective making more money, instead think to create something new, unique and different. True internet marketers prefer to experiment something new every day rather that following the typical ways. Similarly being an artist you love to share and learn something new everytime and this is the key of the success in the internet marketing.

    • Quite a good analogy Stepehen, and I agree. Marketers should never be afraid of trying something new and learn from it a long the way. Sharing both positives and negatives of this ordeal is what makes them stand out. Thanks for your input.

  • Great article! It helps everybody who wants to be a good in internet marketing… thanks for sharing those useful tips.

  • Thanks for including my post on the custom RSS feeds. I think there’s a point if you can’t find the functionality you want out there, you have to dig deep and make it happen yourself, which is what I did with the feeds. 🙂

  • Great information here Ditesco. I love the way you presented everything and it’s absolutely good nuggets to abide with. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great article Ely.

I think the most important point you made is learning the skills to sell without selling. Being able to promote and drive the audience towards buying something without being pushy or too obvious is truly an art. Thanks for the tips.
